It is one of the largest houses of this type still standing in Sacramento. It retains integrity of design, materials, workmanship and setting, with ornate spindlework, sunburst details and a mansarded porch.","narrative":"Built in 1890 on H Street in Sacramento's mid-town, this three-story Queen Anne-Eastlake house was the showplace of Herman Winters, a German-born grocer who came west during the gold rush. Its redwood balloon frame carries ornate detail: sunburst pediments, a scrollwork frieze, dentil work in the gables, a mansarded front porch and spindle and stick balustrades. Inside, Eastlake influence appears in the fireplace tile and mantel spindles. The house was raised about two feet in 1909 by Winters' widow, Effie, who added a flat beneath, and later became several apartments. Rear additions from the 1950s and interior changes diminished parts of the building, yet the form, materials and workmanship of the main structure remain largely intact. Restoration beginning in 1996 repaired the roof, gutters, chimneys and trim. It is described as one of the largest surviving houses of its type in the city, which is the basis for its recognition for architecture.","period_of_significance":"1890","architect_builder":"Unknown (the form lists the original owner, Herman Winters, as owner/builder in the narrative)","architectural_style":"Queen Anne - Eastlake","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Multiple dwelling (four flats); restoration work underway in 1996-1999 including a new roof, box gutter and chimney repairs, with rear 1950s additions slated for removal.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:27.867592-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_CA/98001634.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/98001634/6c1fe6fc8c-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/98001634/6c1fe6fc8c-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Irneh","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Winters_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Irneh</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Winters_House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/123860698","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Winters_House_(Sacramento,_California)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q8026504"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/california/sacramento-county/winters-house-98001634/"}
