Its design combines eastern European orthodox features with regional vernacular forms and materials. It also reflects the Jewish agricultural and boarding-house settlement of the Catskills, and it retains an exceptionally high degree of integrity.","narrative":"Anshei Glen Wild Synagogue is a small, rectangular, one-story house of worship on the east side of Glen Wild Road in eastern Sullivan County. Built into a hillside, it has concrete block walls with stucco, a gable roof, large round-arched windows with colored and opaque glass, and a bell-shaped porch roof at the entrance. Inside, a square sanctuary under a barrel-vaulted ceiling follows orthodox tradition, with a central bimah, pews facing the ark, and curtained seating for women. The congregation formed in 1913 and met in the home of Simon Jaffe until Jim Couch and his sons completed the building in 1923. A social hall addition was added at the rear in the 1950s. Glen Wild was among the first Catskills locations settled by eastern European Jewish farmers and boarding-house keepers. The building is notable as one of sixteen synagogues built in the county before the 1930s, and for blending orthodox features with regional vernacular design while keeping its original character.","period_of_significance":"1923","architect_builder":"Jim Couch and Sons","architectural_style":"No style","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Still serves as a religious facility; the form lists both historic and current function as religious.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:51.47428-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/98001618.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/98001618/4ec18c424b-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/98001618/4ec18c424b-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Daniel Case","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Anshei_Glen_Wild_Synagogue.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Daniel Case</a>, <a href=\"http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Anshei_Glen_Wild_Synagogue.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75322329","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anshei_Glen_Wild_Synagogue","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q569774"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/sullivan-county/anshei-glen-wild-synagogue-98001618/"}
