These were the first designed with diesel-electric power plants. No. 115 was one of the first of her class and the first commissioned on the East Coast. She keeps much of her 1930 material and appearance.","narrative":"Frying Pan Shoals Lightship No. 115 is a riveted-steel lightship, 133.3 feet long, built in 1929-1930 in Charleston, South Carolina, and now moored at Pier 63 on the Hudson River in New York City. She was stationed about 18 miles off North Carolina at Frying Pan Shoals, marking a hazard near the approach to the Cape Fear River, and served there until 1965, apart from wartime duty as an examination ship from 1942 to 1945. A permanent tower then replaced her, and she was decommissioned in 1967. She belongs to a class of lightships that were the first built for the U.S. Lighthouse Service with diesel-electric power and all-steel construction, and she was the first of that class commissioned on the East Coast. The wheelhouse, master's cabin, radio room, bell, forward mast and anchor windlass survive. Few lightships remain afloat, and this one preserves much of her 1930 fabric and appearance.","period_of_significance":"1929-1930","architect_builder":"Charleston Dry Dock and Machine Co., Charleston, SC","architectural_style":"OTHER: lightship","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Open to the public as a museum ship while undergoing restoration; propulsion and electrical generation now come from non-historic diesel engines.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:50.270554-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/98001615.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/98001615/5a30df1dfc-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/98001615/5a30df1dfc-1600.webp","licence":"No restrictions","author":"State Archives of North Carolina","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Frying_Pan_Shoals_Lightship0002_(22112867246).jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">State Archives of North Carolina</a>, <a href=\"https://www.flickr.com/commons/usage/\" rel=\"license noopener\">No restrictions</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Frying_Pan_Shoals_Lightship0002_(22112867246).jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75319530","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_lightship_Frying_Pan_(LV-115)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q588285"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/manhattan/frying-pan-shoals-lightship-no-115-lightship-98001615/"}
