Green and Sons.","why_significant":"The school is argued to be a distinguished and intact example of standardized early-twentieth-century urban school design in western New York. It is also tied to Tonawanda's growth and the importance of public education in the community. It retains a high level of period integrity, including its original floor plan and many interior features.","narrative":"Kibler High School is a three-story brick and limestone school at the corner of Main and Minerva Streets in Tonawanda, built in 1925-27 to designs by the Buffalo firm Edward B. Green and Sons. Braas Bros. Co. served as general contractor. The school was named for William J. Kibler, the school board president who promoted a new high school when the Clinton Street School could no longer hold the growing student population. Its Classical Revival design includes a pedimented central entrance pavilion with Corinthian pilasters, rusticated masonry, a red clay tile roof and an elaborate cupola. The plan is T-shaped, with classrooms in the front block and an auditorium, gymnasium and pool at the rear. Repetitive window patterns and blank end bays reflect the standardized school design of the period. Additions were made in the late 1950s and 1960s, and many windows were replaced, but the original plan and many interior features survive. The school closed in 1983 and is now vacant.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1925-1948","architect_builder":"Edward B. Green and Sons (Architects); Braas Bros. Co.
