It is one of only three known surviving Burr arch truss bridges in the state. It also illustrates the transportation network and vernacular engineering of the Clarke estate in the Federal period.","narrative":"Spanning Shadow Brook near the north end of Otsego Lake, this 53-foot covered timber bridge was built in 1825 to carry the main road across the Clarke family's Hyde Hall estate. Its frame combines the patented Burr arch truss with vertical posts and intersecting diagonal timbers, and it is sheathed in horizontal weatherboard under a wood shingle roof. The bridge later became part of the Otsego Lake Turnpike, a toll road created to shorten the route between Cooperstown and the Great Western Turnpike. Surviving estate receipts record lumber purchased for its construction in 1825. After New York acquired the property in 1963, the bridge, then in poor repair, was restored beginning in 1967, with new concrete abutments faced in fieldstone and replacement roof, siding and flooring matched to the originals. It is regarded as the earliest extant covered wood bridge in the state and one of three surviving Burr arch examples. It now serves pedestrians in Glimmerglass State Park.","period_of_significance":"1825","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"No Style","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Restored beginning in 1967 after being in poor repair when the state acquired the property in 1963; now used as a pedestrian crossing in Glimmerglass State Park.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:50.149027-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/98001539.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/98001539/bc55773495-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/98001539/bc55773495-1600.webp","licence":"CC0","author":"Waz8","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Hyde_Hall_Covered_Bridge_-_west_view.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Waz8</a>, <a href=\"http://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/zero/1.0/deed.en\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Hyde_Hall_Covered_Bridge_-_west_view.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"99001136","name":"Glimmerglass Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/new-york/glimmerglass-historic-district-99001136/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75320948","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hyde_Hall_Bridge","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5953540"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/otsego-county/hyde-hall-covered-bridge-98001539/"}
