The main house uses half-round logs, stone foundations, shingle siding and hand-hewn ceiling beams, with the buildings sited to fit the natural landscape. Its significance is architectural, under Criterion C.","narrative":"Built ca. 1926 on a mountainside in Fairview, north of Asheville, this group of Rustic-style buildings was constructed for William Nelson Camp, Jr., a member of the Camp family whose fortunes came from timber, paper, phosphate mining and hydroelectric power in Virginia and Florida. Camp bought the land in 1925 and used local builders, a sawmill on the adjacent property and field stone gathered on site. The main house is a one-and-one-half story building with half-log walls on the first floor, shingled upper walls, steep gable roofs and multi-light casement windows. Its great room has a random-laid field stone fireplace and exposed hand-hewn ceiling beams. Smaller outbuildings include a water storage building, a garage, a cottage, two spring houses and a barn, several of them built into the hillside and using local granite. Camp also used the creek on the property for a small hydroelectric plant. The complex is regarded as a highly intact example of Rustic architecture in Buncombe County from the early twentieth century.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1926","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Rustic","criteria":["C"],"status_note":null,"vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-haiku-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.1-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 17:11:42.720924-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/53/7191/47719153/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/98001530.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/98001530/c4b2387ef3-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/98001530/c4b2387ef3-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Bill Fitzpatrick","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Willie_Nelson_Camp.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Bill Fitzpatrick</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Willie_Nelson_Camp.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47719153","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Nelson_Camp_Jr._House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q17986240"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/buncombe-county/camp-william-nelson-jr-house-98001530/"}
