Its mantels include a sunburst, four-leaf clover and pine cone design with no known precedent in North Carolina architecture. It also retains its relationship to the nearby ancestral Hoyle House and is tied to Eli Hoyle's family.","narrative":"Built about 1830-1833, this two-story frame house with an attic stands on a 2.76-acre lot along the Dallas-Stanley Highway near Dallas. It was the seat of a 356-acre plantation that Andrew Hoyle conveyed to his son Eli in 1832, and Eli lived there until his death in 1844. Later owners included the Withers family and, from 1929 to 1997, Walter Larrington Stroup and his descendants. The house has a five-bay front with a full-width porch, Flemish-bond brick end chimneys, and a classical entrance with fluted columns and sidelights. Inside, a center-hall plan holds four original mantels, six-panel doors, wainscoting and a fully developed staircase based on a pattern from Owen Biddle's Young Carpenter's Assistant. One parlor mantel carries a sunburst and four-leaf clover motif with no known North Carolina precedent. The rear kitchen ell was altered over time, but the main block is largely intact. The house stands a few hundred feet from the ancestral Hoyle House.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Federal","criteria":[],"status_note":"Current function is listed as work in progress; the property is a 2.76-acre house lot with two noncontributing frame outbuildings, and modern wall paneling and closets were being removed in 1997-1998.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:57:50.976521-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/69/7203/47720369/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/98001529.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/98001529/e6bb408d37-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/98001529/e6bb408d37-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"RoxylovesHistory","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Eli_Hoyle_House_-_front_view_-_9-20-2014.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">RoxylovesHistory</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Eli_Hoyle_House_-_front_view_-_9-20-2014.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47720369","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eli_Hoyle_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q18711581"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/gaston-county/hoyle-eli-house-98001529/"}
