It also reflects Elmira's growth and the Episcopal Diocese of Central New York's expansion into growing communities.","narrative":"Emmanuel Episcopal Church sits on the northeast corner of Pennsylvania Avenue and Mt. Zoar Street in Elmira's Southside neighborhood, across the Chemung River from the city center. Built in 1907-1908, it is a High Victorian Gothic building of concrete block cast to look like rough-hewn stone, with smooth concrete trim, a steep gabled roof, an engaged corner tower and a low entry vestibule. Inside, a vaulted ceiling with pointed masonry arches frames stained glass windows, and eight murals added in 1944 depict the life of Christ. The congregation grew from Southside mission services begun in 1866 and a converted 1828 house used from 1891. Local architect Joseph Considine designed the church, and Thurston & Haskell built it. Its patterned walls, broad low proportions and picturesque profile make it a representative example of the Gothic-inspired style favored for Episcopal churches, and it reflects Elmira's growth into the twentieth century.","period_of_significance":"1907-1908","architect_builder":"Considine/Thurston & Haskell and","architectural_style":"Late Victorian/High Victorian Gothic","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still used as a religious facility; a non-contributing 1828 parish house stands on the lot.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:51.182111-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/98001395.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/98001395/ef29b1b336-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/98001395/ef29b1b336-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Lvklock","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Emmanuel_Episcopal_Elmira.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Lvklock</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Emmanuel_Episcopal_Elmira.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75316810","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emmanuel_Episcopal_Church_(Elmira,_New_York)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5373214"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/chemung-county/emmanuel-epsicopal-church-98001395/"}
