It includes 75 contributing and 21 noncontributing resources, mostly dating from 1800 to 1940.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the district is a highly intact example of a typical upstate New York rural hamlet, significant in community development (social history) and architecture. The hamlet grew from early mill sites into a commercial and service center. Most of its built environment was in place by 1900, and it has lost relatively little since.","narrative":"Roseboom is a rural hamlet in Otsego County, New York, about two miles south of Cherry Valley, where NY routes 165 and 166 meet at Cherry Valley Creek. The historic district takes in its core: two churches, a cemetery, a general store, a former school, a grange hall, early twentieth-century industrial buildings, and many dwellings with barns, hop houses and other outbuildings. Most buildings date from 1840 to 1900 and show Federal, Greek Revival and Italianate styling. The hamlet began around 1800 as a mill settlement on the south side of the creek, and a commercial and service area grew on the north side by the mid-1830s. By the 1850s the two areas were treated as one place. Some losses occurred, including a stone blacksmith shop in 1959 and the Roseboom Hotel, which burned in 1973. The district was listed for its community development and architecture, with a period of significance of 1800 to 1940.","period_of_significance":"1800-1940","architect_builder":"unknown","architectural_style":"Federal, Greek Revival, Italianate, Classical Revival","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Still includes a general store housing the post office, a church, and a meeting hall in the former Baptist church. The grange hall is described as disused, and the old schoolhouse is now a dwelling.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:50.720323-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/98001394.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/98001394/eefa5b93e4-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/98001394/eefa5b93e4-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 2.0","author":"Doug Kerr from Upstate New York","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Roseboom_Historic_District_Methodist_Church_Aug_10.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Doug Kerr from Upstate New York</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 2.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Roseboom_Historic_District_Methodist_Church_Aug_10.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75320979","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roseboom_Historic_District","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7368086"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/otsego-county/roseboom-historic-district-98001394/"}
