Wooster Avenue in Dover, Tuscarawas County, Ohio, on a corner lot just north of downtown.","why_significant":"Nominated under Criterion C as a significant example of Italianate architecture in Dover, with many defining features of the style and a high degree of integrity. It is one of only three surviving brick Italianate houses in Dover judged to retain enough integrity to possibly qualify for listing. It was built by Dr. Joseph Slingluff, an early mayor and city developer.","narrative":"Built in 1866, this two-story brick house on North Wooster Avenue in Dover is a well-preserved example of Italianate design. It has a low-pitched hip roof with a paneled cornice and paired carved brackets, a semi-octagonal bay on the facade, an oriel bay on the south side, and segmental arch windows with stone lug sills and carved hood molds. A double-door round arch entry opens to a side hall with a decorated staircase, carved marble fireplaces, paired pocket doors, and built-in dining room cabinets. A wrap-around porch with cement block columns was added around 1904-1910. The house was built by Dr. Joseph Slingluff, who came from Maryland in 1828, practiced medicine, served as an early mayor, and platted several additions to the city, including the one where his house stands. Only about ten brick Italianate houses survive in Dover, and this is one of three with enough integrity to possibly qualify for listing. It was listed for its architecture.","period_of_significance":"1866, 1904-1910","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Italianate","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still used as a single dwelling. A modern garage built in 1997 is noncontributing; the kitchen has been modernized and the windows and front porch altered.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:07.618688-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/98001384.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/98001384/095f897e56-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/98001384/095f897e56-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Roseohioresident","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Dr._Joseph_Slingluff_House.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Roseohioresident</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Dr._Joseph_Slingluff_House.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71991740","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q138753468"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/tuscarawas-county/slingluff-dr-joseph-house-98001384/"}
