It was built in 1929 and enlarged in 1937 and 1942-43.","why_significant":"The nomination argues it meets Criterion A for its significance in defense. It was the primary training and flight operations center at NAS Glenview, the Navy's largest primary flight training facility during World War II, and the nerve center of a unique carrier qualification program. It retains much of its World War II appearance.","narrative":"Hangar 1 is a large brick and steel aviation building at the former Naval Air Station Glenview, near Chicago. It began in 1929 as part of the Curtiss-Reynolds Airport, designed by Chicago architect Andrew N. Rebori with International style features such as a horizontal profile, large windows and open balconies. The airport struggled after the stock market crash, and the property passed to the federal government in 1936. The Navy added a central section in 1937 and greatly enlarged the building in 1942-43, adding observation towers, a flight operations room and a control tower. During World War II it served as the station's training, repair and maintenance center, and housed flight control, classrooms and mess facilities. Glenview was the Navy's largest primary flight training facility, and its carrier qualification program, using converted lake steamers, was unique. The hangar has changed little since 1943 and retains its brick walls, steel windows, towers and hangar bay trusses. It is now owned by the Village of Glenview.","period_of_significance":"1937-1945","architect_builder":"Andrew N.
