A c. 1861-63 summer kitchen stands behind it.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the house is locally significant under Criterion C as one of the best examples of a high-style Greek Revival home with Classical Revival updates in Ottawa. It grew in seven stages under three owning families, and its Greek Revival entry, porch and interior woodwork and its Classical Revival porte-cochère and columns survive. The exterior has changed little since 1916.","narrative":"Set well back on a wide, landscaped lot along Ottawa Avenue, this brick house in Ottawa, Illinois, was begun between 1852 and 1857 by George Smith Fisher and grew over the next six decades. The Fisher family built the north block and dining room. The Nash family added a kitchen, a west wing and a wooden summer kitchen around 1861-63, followed by later bathroom additions. The Griggs family then gave the house its Classical Revival touches between 1912 and 1916, including a deeper front porch, Ionic parlor columns, a wrought-iron fence, a porte-cochère and a second story over the south section. Its Greek Revival features include a six-column Doric porch, a doorway crowned with an anthemion design, symmetrical windows and a low hipped roof. The house is considered locally significant for its architecture, as one of the best high-style Greek Revival homes in Ottawa. Architect Sylvanus Grow is said to have designed it.","period_of_significance":"c. 1852 - c. 1916","architect_builder":"Grow, Sylvannus, Architect","architectural_style":"Greek Revival; Classical Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Used as a single-family dwelling. It was divided into apartments in the 1950s, and the main-floor evidence of that has since been removed.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:37.58515-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/1/8934/28893401/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_IL/98001353.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/98001353/35d8f4195c-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/98001353/35d8f4195c-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"IvoShandor","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Ottawa_IL_Fisher-Nash-Griggs_House1.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">IvoShandor</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Ottawa_IL_Fisher-Nash-Griggs_House1.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/28893401","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fisher%E2%80%93Nash%E2%80%93Griggs_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5454746"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/illinois/lasalle-county/fisher-nash-griggs-house-98001353/"}
