Nurse of the Office of the Quartermaster General. It includes officers' housing, the BOQ, base buildings and landscaping.","why_significant":"The remaining areas preserve the planned Army air base designed by Nurse in a distinctive Spanish Eclectic style, blending Mission, Moorish, Churrigueresque and Art Moderne elements. The design applied Nurse's published planning principles to create a 'city within a city'. After later redevelopment razed many original buildings, only three areas kept enough integrity to qualify.","narrative":"Hamilton Army Air Field near Novato, Marin County, was built between 1932 and 1935 as a planned military community. Captain Howard B. Nurse of the Office of the Quartermaster General directed the design, with local civilian architects and engineers assisting. Nurse chose a Spanish Eclectic style that mixed Mission, Moorish, Churrigueresque, Renaissance and Art Moderne elements, using reinforced concrete, hollow tile, stucco and Mission tile roofs. Officers' houses came in twelve designs, with larger and more elaborate plans placed on higher ground for higher ranks, and the base commander's house was the largest. Nurse also directed the landscaping, including palms, oaks, rock retaining walls and curved roads. After the base closed and was redeveloped, many original buildings were demolished and street patterns changed. Only three separate areas retained enough integrity to be recognized as a district. Together they preserve the housing, key buildings and designed landscape of one of the Army's most carefully planned interwar air bases. Most of the district is now vacant.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Office of the Quartermaster General, Washington, D.C., under Captain (later Colonel) Howard B.
