Built by Confederate forces in the winter of 1861-1862.","why_significant":"The fortifications were part of the Confederate defensive line protecting Manassas after the First Battle of Manassas, and are the last remaining works built by the Confederate Army of the Potomac in Fairfax County. The redoubt was also used in combat in October 1863. The site holds archaeological potential on early Confederate field engineering and camp layout.","narrative":"Two Confederate earthworks on a wooded plateau near Union Mills, Fairfax County, preserve the military landscape of Camp Early. The larger fort, shaped like an A, measures about 550 by 500 feet and has five cannon embrasures at its apex. About 1,200 feet south, a square redoubt has nine embrasures. Nearby are traces of 156 tent platforms, latrine trenches, a well and house remains. Confederate troops under General Joseph E. Johnston built the works in the winter of 1861-1862 as part of the defenses of Manassas, and units under General Jubal Early occupied the camp. The army withdrew in March 1862, but the line had delayed a renewed Union advance. In October 1863 Union artillery used the Battery Hill Redoubt to drive back Confederate cavalry attacking McClean's Ford. These are the last surviving works built by the Confederate Army of the Potomac in the county, and they hold archaeological evidence of early war engineering and camp life, despite damage from relic hunting and erosion.","period_of_significance":"1861-1865","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":null,"criteria":["A"],"status_note":"Covered by secondary forest; damaged by erosion, relic hunting and off-road vehicle traffic.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:00.947573-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/51/6805/41680551/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/98001315.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/98001315/9239d35253-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/98001315/9239d35253-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Jerrye & Roy Klotz, MD","credit_html":"Jerrye & Roy Klotz, MD, CC BY-SA 4.0, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:%E2%80%9CA%E2%80%9D_FORT_AND_BATTERY_HILL_REDOUBT_%E2%80%93_CAMP_EARLY_-_AKA_MEASLES_FORT.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41680551","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%22A%22_Fort_and_Battery_Hill_Redoubt-Camp_Early","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14560090"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/fairfax/a-fort-and-battery-hill-redoubt-camp-early-98001315/"}
