It is the only county building erected before the 1970s specifically to serve as a town hall, and it remains largely intact, especially on the exterior.","narrative":"Built in 1939-1940 at 311 North Second Avenue, Siler City's city hall is a two-story, seven-bay Colonial Revival building faced in rusticated gray granite from a quarry in Randolph County. Its front is dominated by a pedimented, four-column pavilion with a portico in antis. Durham architect R.R. Markley designed it and local contractor Carl Phillips supervised construction under the Works Progress Administration. The project cost $73,289, with the WPA providing $51,000 and the town the remainder. It replaced a small 1926 brick municipal building and was placed on the site of the former Thompson School. Over the years the building has housed a fireman's hall, library, health department, auditorium, and city offices, and it still serves the town government. It is listed for architecture as one of three surviving WPA buildings in Chatham County and its most impressive civic building of the period, remaining largely intact on the exterior.","period_of_significance":"1939-1940","architect_builder":"Markley, R.R., Architect; Phillips, Carl, Contractor","architectural_style":"Late 19th and 20th Century Revivals: Colonial Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still in use as city hall, housing the police department, administrative offices, and county magistrate and courtroom; the basic plan is unaltered, though interiors have been refurbished.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:57:50.010798-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/35/7195/47719535/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/98001302.pdf"},"photo":null,"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47719535","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Siler_City_City_Hall","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q18158052"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/chatham-county/siler-city-city-hall-98001302/"}
