It combines meetinghouse planning adapted to liturgical worship with high-quality local craftsmanship, Tuscan-order gallery columns and mahogany-stained woodwork. It is also described as an important landmark of German architecture and culture in Page County.","narrative":"Mount Calvary Lutheran Church is a two-story brick building completed in 1848 on a knoll at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains near Luray, at the end of a long dirt road. It has had no additions and almost no alterations. The walls are laid in American bond with locally kilned brick, and the roof is standing-seam metal. Inside, the pews face the long side of the rectangle, a meetinghouse arrangement adapted to liturgical worship, with a pulpit platform on the north wall. A gallery on three sides rests on Tuscan columns, and much of the woodwork carries a red mahogany stain. The congregation traces its roots to German settlers of the 1720s, and earlier log and other church buildings preceded this third structure. Newer Lutheran churches founded in the late nineteenth century drew members away, and regular services ended in 1959. The property is recognized for its intact architecture, craftsmanship and German heritage, and a small cemetery lies beside it.","period_of_significance":"1848 - 1912","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Early Republic; Federal","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Regular services ceased in 1959 and the building is used only for occasional homecoming services; restoration was underway at the time of the form.
