The one-acre property also includes a detached privy.","why_significant":"It is one of only two intact nineteenth-century schoolhouses remaining in the Town of Pompey. It represents nearly a century of rural public education, from 1857 to 1943, and shows vernacular Greek Revival design typical of mid-nineteenth century rural schools in the region. Later alterations record the school district's efforts to improve classroom conditions, and the rural setting adds to its interpretive value.","narrative":"Built in 1857 in the rural hamlet of Pompey Center, this one-room frame schoolhouse served as District No. 10's school until 1943. It replaced an earlier school destroyed by fire in January 1857. The gabled building sits on a stone foundation and faces U.S. Route 20, the former Cherry Valley Turnpike. Its original clapboards, sidelighted entrance, painted tablet bearing the school's name, cornice returns and small belfry with the original bell reflect a vernacular take on Greek Revival style. Inside, original flooring, wainscoting and door frames survive alongside later windows, panelling, light fixtures, cast iron desks and a stove. A detached late nineteenth-century privy also remains. The school is one of only two intact nineteenth-century schoolhouses left in Pompey and illustrates rural education in central New York. After closing as a school, it became a community center and war memorial in 1945, and since 1976 it has housed the local historical society's museum collection.","period_of_significance":"1857-1943","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Mid-19th century / Greek Revival (vernacular expression)","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Converted to a community recreation center and war memorial in 1945, rehabilitated by the Town of Pompey in 1974-75, and used since 1976 as a local history museum by the Pompey Historical Society.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:50.013499-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/98001007.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/98001007/5e19ed91cf-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/98001007/5e19ed91cf-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Lvklock","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:PompeyCtrSchool.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Lvklock</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:PompeyCtrSchool.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75320426","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pompey_Centre_District_No._10_Schoolhouse","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7227479"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/onondaga-county/pompey-centre-district-no-10-schoolhouse-98001007/"}
