Its above-average detailing, rural setting and supporting structures reflect the area's development as an agrarian community.","narrative":"Set on a 2.7-acre parcel at the end of a narrow dirt lane in the Town of Crawford, this farmstead centers on a one-and-a-half-story, five-bay frame house. The eastern part is believed to date to the late eighteenth century, when John Shorter and his wife Elizabeth settled the land. About 1840 their son John Jr. enlarged and remodeled the house, adding Greek Revival features such as a sidelighted front doorway with pilasters and corner blocks, eared window architraves and a small columned porch. Inside, the hall, parlor and rear room keep their period woodwork, including an unusual paneled baseboard and a mahogany newel post. The older section retains a keeping room with a beehive bake oven. A spring house, a two-story wagon house, a stone foundation ruin and dry-laid stone walls complete the group. The property is recognized locally as an intact example of vernacular Greek Revival architecture and of a rural farming community.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1790 - ca. 1840","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Mid-19th Century/Greek Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Remains in use as a single dwelling; modern siding covers the original clapboard, and the owners planned to expose it.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:50.58844-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/98001004.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/98001004/452bf9b2b8-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/98001004/452bf9b2b8-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Daniel Case","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Shorter_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Daniel Case</a>, <a href=\"http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Shorter_House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75320740","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shorter_House_(Crawford,_New_York)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q15277432"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/orange-county/shorter-house-98001004/"}
