It was built circa 1830 as a store and post office and remodeled as a school before 1860.","why_significant":"The nomination argues it is one of only two intact nineteenth-century schoolhouses left in the Town of Pompey, out of 26 district schools once serving the town. It represents a century of rural public education and typical mid-nineteenth-century rural school construction. It is also one of only two intact historic buildings remaining in the hamlet of Oran.","narrative":"Standing on Route 92 in the hamlet of Oran, in the Town of Pompey southeast of Syracuse, this one-story frame building began as a store and post office around 1830. Before 1860 it was remodeled as a school. It has a mortise-and-tenon timber frame, clapboard siding, a stone foundation that rises a full story at the rear, and a simple Federal-style cornice with gable returns. Inside, a vestibule and cloakroom lead to a classroom with beaded board wainscoting, slate blackboards and restored bench and desk units. The schoolhouse served as a public school until 1951, when it was sold to the Oran Memorial Park Association and became a veterans memorial and community center. It is valued as one of only two intact one-room schoolhouses remaining in Pompey, which once had 26 district schools, and as one of two intact historic buildings left in Oran. It still hosts meetings, a polling place and local clubs.","period_of_significance":"circa 1830-1951","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Early Republic / Federal; Late Victorian / Victorian","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Used since 1951 as the Oran Memorial Center, a community meeting space and polling place; the form says it retains a high degree of integrity.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:50.880696-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/98001002.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/98001002/4f84e400de-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/98001002/4f84e400de-1600.webp","licence":"CC0","author":null,"credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Oran_schoolhouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Unknown author</a>, <a href=\"http://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/zero/1.0/deed.en\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Oran_schoolhouse.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75320416","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oran_District_No._22_Schoolhouse","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7099436"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/onondaga-county/oran-district-no-22-schoolhouse-98001002/"}
