Together with its outbuildings, landscape features and family cemetery, it reflects the town's development as a prosperous rural farming community and may yield information on regional agricultural practices.","narrative":"This farm on Route 302 in the Town of Crawford, Orange County, centers on a two-and-a-half-story frame farmhouse erected about 1780, probably by Jonathan Crawford, son of early settler James Crawford. A rear wing was added in the Greek Revival period. Later owners updated the house in the Federal era around 1820, the mid-Greek Revival era and the Victorian era, leaving a layered record of changing styles. Surviving features include wide beaded eighteenth-century siding, forged hinges, an Adamesque parlor mantel, a Greek Revival doorway and a cherry staircase. The property also retains a smokehouse, woodshed, carriage house, well house, a large barn complex with a late nineteenth-century tower, dry-laid stone walls and the remains of an orchard. A small family cemetery, with burials from 1814 to 1911, lies about 300 feet south. The farm was listed for its architecture and its rare, well-preserved farm setting, which reflects the area's agricultural past.","period_of_significance":"ca.1780-ca.1870","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Early Republic/Federal","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still used as a single dwelling with agricultural fields; the house was restored by its last owners, while the family cemetery is deteriorated and vandalized.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:50.015551-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/98001000.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/98001000/aa08839051-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/98001000/aa08839051-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Daniel Case","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:John_I_Crawford_Farm.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Daniel Case</a>, <a href=\"http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:John_I_Crawford_Farm.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75320620","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_I._Crawford_Farm","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6240695"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/orange-county/crawford-john-i-farm-98001000/"}
