It retains fabric from circa 1814 and from a Queen Anne style remodelling in 1884. Only three of the town's 22 nineteenth century district schools remain recognizable as schools.","narrative":"Built around 1814 as the first and last school building in Cazenovia's District No. 7, this one-room frame schoolhouse served local children until 1931, when rural schools were centralized. It was remodelled in 1884 under trustee L. Wolters Ledyard, who added a Queen Anne style wall dormer and board and batten siding on the east front. The classroom still holds its early heavy timber framing, beaded wainscot, slate blackboards and layers of old wallpaper. After the school closed, it was used as a chicken house and carpentry shop. In 1997 it was moved to the grounds of the Lorenzo State Historic Site, where a stone-faced foundation reuses stones from the 1884 foundation and a 1998 rear extension provides accessibility. It is listed as a rare survivor: of Cazenovia's 22 nineteenth century district schools, only three remain recognizable, and this one is the oldest and most distinctive. It now serves educational programs for children.","period_of_significance":"1814-1931","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Early Republic / Federal; Late Victorian / Queen Anne","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Moved intact in 1997 and being restored for use in the Lorenzo State Historic Site's educational and interpretive programs for children; current function listed as museum.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:51.043456-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/98000996.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/98000996/e94e821664-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/98000996/e94e821664-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY 4.0","author":"Eddie891","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Rippleton_Schoolhouse,_Cazenovia.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Eddie891</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Rippleton_Schoolhouse,_Cazenovia.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75318738","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rippleton_Schoolhouse","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7335733"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/madison-county/rippleton-schoolhouse-98000996/"}
