It contains late 19th- to early 20th-century resort cottages built between 1895 and 1930 in a coastal dune landscape.","why_significant":"The district is argued to be significant at the state level under Criteria A and C. It is the surviving remnant of The Strand, a beach resort development on the only Georgia barrier island developed as a general-public coastal resort. It also holds excellent examples of Strand cottages and raised Tybee cottages set within a distinctive coastal landscape design.","narrative":"Along Butler Avenue between 12th and 14th Streets on Tybee Island, a row of wooden summer cottages survives from the island's years as a seaside resort. Built mostly between 1895 and 1930, the houses sit on raised wooden piers with hipped or gabled roofs, wrap-around porches and tall floor-to-ceiling windows. The ground level held servants' quarters and changing rooms. Later cottages, built after Tybee Road opened in 1923, are smaller and square, with garage space added beneath. The cottages occupy long narrow lots laid out in an 1873 subdivision, with coastal vegetation along the lot lines and walkways linking each house to its neighbors and the ocean. Tybee is described as the only Georgia barrier island developed as a resort for the general public, with middle-class families using these seasonal homes. Later development removed much of the original Strand, leaving these cottages as what remains of that resort community. The district is recognized for its role in resort development and for its architecture and landscape.","period_of_significance":"1873 to 1930","architect_builder":"AP Solomon Sr./builder (Middleton-Crawford Cottage); David Thomas Furse/builder (Stoker-Furse-Sipple Cottage); George Dutton/builder (Roberts-Sack-Hickman Cottage)","architectural_style":"Other: Strand Cottages; Other: Raised Tybee Cottages","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Historic and current function is single-family dwelling and beach recreation; later subdivision and new construction in the 1970s and 1980s replaced part of the original Strand area, and the Hotel Tybee wing is significantly altered.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:42.662482-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_GA/98000971.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/98000971/03cb7fed60-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/98000971/03cb7fed60-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Bubba73","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Strand_Cottages_Historic_District,_Tybee_Island,_GA,_US_(13).jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Bubba73</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Strand_Cottages_Historic_District,_Tybee_Island,_GA,_US_(13).jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/93207367","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tybee_Island_Strand_Cottages_Historic_District","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7859696"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/georgia/chatham-county/tybee-island-strand-cottages-historic-district-98000971/"}
