It includes a two-and-one-half story wood-framed mill, a stone dam, two mill races with sluice gates, a waterwheel and the site of the miller's house.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the mill is one of the last remaining grist mills in Gwinnett County and the state that could still operate, because its machinery is largely intact. It is cited as a good example of utilitarian rural mill design with heavy timber framing and of 19th- and early 20th-century hydropower engineering. It also represents Georgia's rural milling industry and a surviving mill landscape.","narrative":"Alcovy Road Grist Mill is a water-powered milling complex on the east side of the Alcovy River, about five miles east of Lawrenceville in Gwinnett County, Georgia. The two-and-one-half story mill was built between 1868 and 1879 with hand-hewn timbers joined by mortise and tenon and wooden pegs. The complex also includes a V-shaped stone dam from about 1910, two mill races with gates, a historic waterwheel, and the site of the miller's house. Most of the interior machinery, including the millstones, belts and gears, remains in place. The mill ground grain until 1986 and in the 1930s supplied meal to state prison camps and a hospital at Lula. It was listed as a good example of utilitarian rural mill design, as a reminder of Georgia's agricultural economy, and for the surviving relationship among river, race and mill. Few operable grist mills remain in the state.","period_of_significance":"1868-1948","architect_builder":"unknown (family history says John Griffin Loveless and Levi J. Loveless built the mill)","architectural_style":"OTHER/Utilitarian","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Listed as vacant/not in use; the mill ceased operating in 1986 but is described as in good condition and could be made operational with a small amount of maintenance. The miller's house was destroyed by fire.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:42.900604-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_GA/98000885.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/98000885/a39e424e77-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/98000885/a39e424e77-1600.webp","licence":"CC0","author":"MallardTV","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Freeman%E2%80%99s_Mill_04.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">MallardTV</a>, <a href=\"http://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/zero/1.0/deed.en\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Freeman%E2%80%99s_Mill_04.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/93208497","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freeman%27s_Mill","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q128800184"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/georgia/gwinnett-county/alcovy-road-grist-mill-98000885/"}
