It meets Criterion C as a little-changed example of this local building type. It meets Criterion A as representative of twentieth-century community development in northeastern Winston-Salem's African-American neighborhoods.","narrative":"Four rental flats sit within a two-story brick block at 706-712 Chestnut Street in Winston-Salem's Depot Street neighborhood. Built about 1941-1942, probably for the Craver family of Davidson County, it has a hipped metal roof, full-height square brick porch posts, and a central exterior wooden stair that splits into a Y shape so each apartment has its own porch. Inside, each unit has a living room, two bedrooms, a kitchen and a bathroom. The building was put up as housing for African-American families just before World War II, when the neighborhood was a busy residential and commercial center. It is among the few surviving examples of the once-common Y-stair brick apartment type built in the city's Black neighborhoods, and it closely resembles the W.C. Brown Apartment Building a block east. Most neighboring buildings, including Pythian Hall, are gone. The exterior is nearly unchanged, and the building remains in good condition and use as apartments.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1942-1948","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Craftsman","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Exterior retains high integrity and is in good condition; still used as multiple dwelling.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:57:51.30762-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/25/7178/47717825/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/98000726.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/98000726/d85764cf71-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/98000726/d85764cf71-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Jerrye & Roy Klotz, MD","credit_html":"Jerrye & Roy Klotz, MD, CC BY-SA 3.0, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:CRAVER_APARTMENT_BUILDING,_FORSYTH_COUNTY.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47717825","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Craver_Apartment_Building","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q19461200"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/forsyth-county/craver-apartment-building-98000726/"}
