Main Street in downtown Palestine, Anderson County, Texas, built in 1882 for George Edward Dilley.","why_significant":"The building is nominated at the local level under Criterion C as an outstanding example of Victorian-era commercial architecture. It is one of the few remaining Italianate commercial structures in Palestine and the city's most outstanding commercial example of the style. A possible but unproven design link to architect Nicholas J. Clayton is also discussed.","narrative":"Built in 1882 for George Edward Dilley, a prominent Palestine citizen and son of a successful railroad-building contractor, this two-story brick building stands on a corner lot in downtown Palestine. It is a two-part commercial block with load-bearing masonry walls. The ground floor has a three-bay storefront framed by cast-iron Corinthian pilasters and columns stamped by the Pullman Foundry, while the second floor has carved-stone hoodmolds over its windows. An elaborate parapet carries floral reliefs, dentils, a metal cornice, and a raised inscription of the owner's name and the construction date. Over the years the building housed a boot and shoe store, the post office, a music store with an upstairs music school, and a printing shop. Few Italianate commercial buildings survive in Palestine, and this one is regarded as the city's finest example. Local speculation links its design to architect Nicholas J. Clayton, though no connection has been proven.","period_of_significance":"1882","architect_builder":"unknown (Clayton, Nicholas J., attributed)","architectural_style":"Late Victorian: Italianate","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Main section described as vacant and in good condition, with restoration completed in 1993 and further restoration underway by a local service league planning exhibit, conference and office use.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:23.998831-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/64/9678/40967864/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_TX/98000698.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/98000698/ecb19230c1-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/98000698/ecb19230c1-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Michael Barera","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Palestine_August_2017_23_(G._E._Dilley_Building).jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Michael Barera</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Palestine_August_2017_23_(G._E._Dilley_Building).jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"100007058","name":"Palestine New Town Commercial Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/texas/palestine-new-town-commercial-historic-district-100007058/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/40967864","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q107321115"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/texas/anderson-county/dilley-g-e-building-98000698/"}
