It has a two-story administration building and a rear drill shed.","why_significant":"It is significant for its link to military history as an early, small upstate armory built for Walton's Thirty-third Separate Company. It is also significant for its association with Walton Grange No. 1454, which acquired it in 1939, and as a representative example of the armory building type in a restrained Romanesque Revival manner.","narrative":"Built in 1886 by the New York National Guard, this brick armory on Stockton Avenue in Walton combines a two-story administration building with a long drill shed at the rear. Its front shows restrained Romanesque Revival brickwork, paired tall windows with stone lintels, and a round-arched entrance under a gabled pavilion. It was constructed for the Thirty-third Separate Company and was among the more fashionable armories in upstate New York at the time. Once the company moved into a larger castellated armory next door in 1895, the older building served as a teachers' academy and later a grade school. In 1939 Walton Grange No. 1454 bought it and converted it to a Grange hall, using the large drill hall as an auditorium and the kitchen and meeting rooms for community events. A small grocery occupies the west end. The building is recognized for its military history, its armory design, and its role in the agricultural life of Delaware County.","period_of_significance":"1886-1939","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Late nineteenth century: Vernacular (Romanesque Revival-inspired)","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Still owned by the Grange and in use as a meeting hall; the west end of the administration building houses a small grocery store.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:49.984208-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/98000666.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/98000666/42ce8af61d-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/98000666/42ce8af61d-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Vonsky87","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Next_to_1454_Grange_Walton_NY.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Vonsky87</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Next_to_1454_Grange_Walton_NY.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75317285","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walton_Grange_No._1454","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7966743"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/delaware-county/walton-grange-1454-former-armory-98000666/"}
