It is the only surviving historic property tied to the city's cotton trade. Despite removal of the equipment in 1960, its form, massing and materials remain intact.","narrative":"Located just north of Palestine's historic downtown, this 2-story, metal-frame building sheathed in corrugated sheet metal was built in 1937 as a cotton gin. J.L. Gatewood and E.H. Shelton contracted with the Murray Company of Dallas to construct and equip it with an 80-saw pneumatic gin. The site had hosted cotton-related businesses since the 1880s, beginning with the Eureka Gin Manufacturing Company. The gin ran through the 1950s and closed when cotton production in Anderson County declined; its machinery was dismantled in 1960 and moved to West Texas. Later uses included a farmer's market and a feed store, and in the early 1990s it became an antiques store and sandwich shop. Its listing rests on its role in local industry: it is the only remaining physical link to Palestine's cotton trade, and its original form, massing and materials survive. A small wood-frame storage building also remains on the property.","period_of_significance":"1937-1945","architect_builder":"Murray Company (builder)","architectural_style":"No style","criteria":["A"],"status_note":"Now houses an antiques store and sandwich shop; ginning equipment was removed in 1960 and only minor exterior alterations have been made.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:24.055634-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/88/9678/40967888/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_TX/98000637.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/98000637/600e65de40-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/98000637/600e65de40-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Renelibrary","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Gatewood-Shelton_Gin_Palestine_Wiki_(1_of_1).jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Renelibrary</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Gatewood-Shelton_Gin_Palestine_Wiki_(1_of_1).jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/40967888","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q107321098"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/texas/anderson-county/gatewood-shelton-gin-98000637/"}
