Its original interior furnishings illustrate the tradition of teaching children of all grades together before centralized school systems. It is also a prominent local landmark.","narrative":"Built in 1884 beside NYS Route 14 south of Montour Falls, Lee School is a plain, gable-roofed, one-room frame schoolhouse on a low dry-laid stone foundation. It has novelty siding, a centered plank door with a transom and pent-roofed hood, and six-over-six windows along the sides. It replaced an earlier log schoolhouse thought to date from before 1829, on land donated by a descendant of early settler David Lee, which gave the school its name. It served as Montour District #1 School until 1937, sat unused until 1960, and was then given to the local historical society. Inside, the blackboards, beaded paneling, wide-board flooring, cast-iron wood stove, and original student and teacher desks survive. The building is considered the only intact school of its type in Schuyler County and a clear reminder of how rural children of all ages once learned together in one room. Its roadside setting has changed with modern development.","period_of_significance":"1884","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Late nineteenth century: Vernacular","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Used as a district schoolhouse until 1937, mothballed until 1960, then turned over to the local historical society; currently serves as a museum.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:51.377679-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/98000572.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/98000572/f115afb0c6-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/98000572/f115afb0c6-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Dmadeo","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Lee_School,_Montour,_NY.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Dmadeo</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Lee_School,_Montour,_NY.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75321799","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lee_School_(Montour,_New_York)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6514965"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/schuyler-county/lee-school-98000572/"}
