It keeps a substantially intact 1727 stone core and a free-standing stone outbuilding later joined to the house. Each successive building campaign left significant historic fabric, showing how the regional Dutch-tradition stone house evolved.","narrative":"Set back from Main Street behind old locust trees in Saugerties, this rubblestone house began in 1727 as a one-and-a-half-story dwelling of three by two bays. Around 1800 it gained two eastern bays with Georgian mantels and built-in cabinets, and a connector joined the main block to a free-standing stone outbuilding that may predate the house. Original wide-plank floors, plaster-on-stone walls, iron hardware and an early Dutch-style door survive on the first floor. The land was deeded in 1724 to Hezekiah DuBois, and in 1773 the house was sold to Dr. Christopher Kierstede, the first physician in the area that became Saugerties. The Kierstede family kept it well into the twentieth century. The property was listed for architecture because it shows the regional stone house type from its earliest form through its early nineteenth century expansion, with significant fabric from each building phase still in place.","period_of_significance":"ca.1727-ca.1800","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Other/Vernacular; Colonial/Georgian","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Used as a single-family dwelling; a non-contributing ca.1940 garage is on the property.
