Wilson in the mountains southwest of Highlands, Macon County, North Carolina, on a roughly three-quarter-acre yard at about 4,000 feet elevation.","why_significant":"The nomination argues it is one of the most intact surviving examples of the single-pen log house type that was common during Macon County's nineteenth-century settlement. Most similar log houses in the county were destroyed or altered beyond recognition. Remote location and continuous occupation by the Wilson family for about 75 years helped preserve it. It is significant locally under Criterion C for architecture.","narrative":"Set on a rise above an unpaved mountain road southwest of Highlands, this single-pen log cabin was built around 1882 by Jeremiah \"Jerry\" Wilson. It measures about eighteen by twenty feet and has one room with a loft, half-dovetail-notched logs, a fieldstone foundation, a metal gable roof, a stone chimney at one end and a shed-roofed front porch. The interior is unfinished, with a quarter-turn stair rising to the loft. Wilson, a Confederate veteran, moved his large family to the mountain property and lived here for most of his marriage. Wilson relatives occupied the house for about seventy-five years, until the property was sold in 1956. Most nineteenth-century log houses in Macon County have been demolished or heavily altered, so this one is considered a rare survivor. A rear frame addition has been removed, and restoration is under way. It was listed for its local architectural significance.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1882","architect_builder":"Jeremiah W.
