A converted barn and a small shed share the 0.65-acre lot.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the house is an excellent example of an early 19th century full Cape Cod house (Criterion C). It has changed little and keeps much of its original paneling and woodwork. Its archaeological potential is also discussed, along with its ties to the Saunders and Paine families of Paine Hollow.","narrative":"Built around 1830 in Wellfleet on Cape Cod, this 1 1/2-story house follows the full Cape plan: a gable roof, a five-bay facade with a center entrance, and rooms arranged around a central chimney. Two front rooms flank the entrance hall, and a keeping room with a large cooking fireplace and beehive oven sits at the rear. The western front room has hand-planed woodwork, high paneled wainscoting and a pilastered mantel. Alterations have been modest, mostly a kitchen and bathroom added sympathetically. The earliest known owner, George B. Saunders, was a partner in a wharf and store on Blackfish Creek and married into the Paine family, early settlers of Paine Hollow. Later occupants included Sulo Thompson, a boat carpenter from the Finnish community. The property was recognized for its architectural integrity as a representative early 19th century Cape Cod house. The lot also has high potential for prehistoric and historic archaeological finds.","period_of_significance":"c. 1830","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Early 19th Century; Other: Cape Cod","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Used as a single dwelling with a secondary structure; the barn was converted to a summer cottage in 1982 and the house is rented out.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:03.74089-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/42/7939/63793942/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/98000474.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/98000474/53b81db719-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/98000474/53b81db719-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Stina716","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:The_Saunders_Paine_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Stina716</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:The_Saunders_Paine_House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63793942","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saunders%E2%80%93Paine_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7427439"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/barnstable-county/saunders-paine-house-98000474/"}
