It crosses the south branch of Farm Creek.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the bridge is locally significant in engineering under Criterion C as an excellent, well-preserved example of late-1800s double stone arch construction. It compares favorably with the only two other stone arch bridges found in the area, one of which has been altered with steel arches and the other of which is a small single-arch structure.","narrative":"Built in 1894, this limestone double-arch bridge carries Cemetery Road over the south branch of Farm Creek in Washington, Illinois, separating the oldest part of Glendale Cemetery from the rest. Its two barrel arches of wedge-shaped voussoirs meet at a center pier, with ashlar stone set in regular courses, skewed wing walls and capped parapets. Frederick Rickman drew the plans in 1893, and Jacob Habluetzel did the mason work for the city, with total construction costs recorded at $509.44. Two railroad rails left in the structure probably supported the wooden framework used during building. The bridge was listed for its engineering significance as an excellent, well-preserved example of late nineteenth-century stone arch construction, and it keeps its original stone arches, unlike a nearby two-arch railroad bridge altered with steel liners. Two parapet blocks have fallen and the bridge is closed to vehicles until repairs are made.","period_of_significance":"1894","architect_builder":"Rickman, Frederick, Engineer; Habluetzel, Jacob, Builder","architectural_style":"Other: Stone double-arch bridge","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Structurally and historically intact, but blocked from vehicular use pending restoration repairs; parts of the north parapet have collapsed and a south cap block is missing.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:37.334872-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/96/8941/28894196/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_IL/98000467.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/98000467/5c647f3154-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/98000467/5c647f3154-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Boscophotos","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Image_Cemetery_Road_Bridge.jpeg\" rel=\"noopener\">Boscophotos</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Image_Cemetery_Road_Bridge.jpeg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/28894196","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cemetery_Road_Bridge","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q22033650"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/illinois/tazewell-county/cemetery-road-bridge-98000467/"}
