It was designed by William Dixon Anderson and built by Calcasieu Lumber Co.","why_significant":"The house is argued to be a well-crafted, intact example of the Monterey style, blending Colonial Revival and Spanish Colonial elements. It was among the first Monterey style houses built in Austin and, standing at the neighborhood gateway, probably influenced later houses nearby. It is significant locally in the area of architecture.","narrative":"Standing on a hilltop at the entrance to Austin's Pemberton Heights neighborhood, this two-story house was completed in 1933 for Maggie Mae and Jacque Nicholas Keith. Her brother, William Dixon Anderson, a longtime Calcasieu Lumber Company employee, designed it, and the company built it during the depths of the Great Depression. The house is an example of the Monterey style, which combines English Colonial features, such as brick, gable-end chimneys and paired shutters with double-hung windows, and Spanish Colonial features, such as a cantilevered wooden balcony and a low-pitched roof. Inside, a 180-degree spiral staircase and a carved mantelpiece stand out, and original woodwork, doors, hardware and bathroom tile survive. The brick veneer over a wood frame kept costs below solid masonry, and the orientation and balconies help cool the house. It was among the first Monterey houses in Austin and retains a high degree of integrity, which supports its local significance for architecture.","period_of_significance":"1933-1948","architect_builder":"William Dixon Anderson, designer / Calcasieu Lumber Co., builder","architectural_style":"Monterey (Other)","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still used as a single-family dwelling; restoration work on shutters, windows and the kitchen was underway at the time of the form.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:23.248346-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/61/9736/40973661/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_TX/98000448.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/98000448/3a3722bb79-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/98000448/3a3722bb79-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Smokeybear69","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Keith_House_(Texas).jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Smokeybear69</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Keith_House_(Texas).jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/40973661","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keith_House_(Austin,_Texas)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6384520"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/texas/travis-county/keith-house-98000448/"}
