The property also includes a carriage house, a cistern and an underground storm shelter.","why_significant":"The house is tied to the life of Dr. L.W. Chilton, a pioneer physician and surgeon in South Texas who served Goliad County for over 50 years and led the medical response after the 1902 cyclone. It is also a well-preserved local example of Late Victorian Queen Anne architecture and one of the largest and most elaborate in Goliad.","narrative":"Dr. Louis Warren Chilton and his wife Martha Ella built this Queen Anne house at 242 North Chilton Street in Goliad in 1902, after a cyclone destroyed their 1892 home. Architect Jules Leffland of Victoria designed it, and local builder Bailey Mills constructed it on the old foundation between June and October. The wood house has an irregular plan, a hipped roof with cross gables, wrap-around porches with spindlework, and a rectangular southeast tower with a mansard roof. A kitchen and bathroom addition followed around 1925. A carriage house, a cistern and a brick underground storm shelter remain on the lot. Dr. Chilton served as Goliad County Physician and treated the injured after the 1902 storm, which killed 114 people. He practiced medicine for more than 50 years. The house keeps much of its original wood, fixtures and woodwork inside and out, and it remained in the Chilton family for over a century.","period_of_significance":"1902-1945","architect_builder":"Leffland, Jules (architect) / Mills, Bailey (builder)","architectural_style":"Late Victorian: Queen Anne","criteria":["B","C"],"status_note":"Historic and current function is a single dwelling; the property was sold out of the Chilton family in 1997.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:24.152749-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/31/9721/40972131/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_TX/98000354.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/98000354/cb9915d737-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/98000354/cb9915d737-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"25or6to4","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Chilton_House_Goliad_Texas.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">25or6to4</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Chilton_House_Goliad_Texas.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/40972131","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dr._L.W._and_Martha_E.S._Chilton_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5304246"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/texas/goliad-county/chilton-dr-l-w-and-martha-e-s-house-98000354/"}
