It has a 212-foot stone tower and spire, an elaborately decorated Arts and Crafts-inspired interior, and is remarkably intact inside and out. It is the fifth building of a congregation dating to 1666.","narrative":"Old First Reformed Church occupies the northwest corner of Seventh Avenue and Carroll Street in Brooklyn's Park Slope, rising above surrounding three- and four-story buildings. Designed by Brooklyn architect George L. Morse and built between 1888 and 1891, it is faced in Salem, Indiana limestone on a granite base. Its 212-foot tower and spire was one of only three such stone spires in Brooklyn when completed. Rose windows, triple lancet windows, buttresses and a stone porte-cochere mark the exterior. Inside, an amphitheater-style sanctuary has coffered barrel vaults, scagliola colonettes, stained glass by several firms including Tiffany, and a mural, The Empty Tomb, by Virgilio Tojetti. Surfaces are richly painted in a manner inspired by the Arts and Crafts movement. The building is the fifth home of a congregation founded in 1666 and was recognized for its architecture and its remarkably intact exterior and interior. The chapel and a 1931 kitchen wing are included.","period_of_significance":"1888-1931","architect_builder":"Morse, George L.","architectural_style":"Late 19th & 20th Century Revivals: Late Gothic Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"The congregation remains very active and is committed to long-term preservation of the building; it is still used as a church.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:50.950623-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/98000316.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/98000316/1d69d26ae7-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/98000316/1d69d26ae7-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Beyond My Ken","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Old_First_Reformed_Church_Park_Slope.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Beyond My Ken</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Old_First_Reformed_Church_Park_Slope.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"80002636","name":"Park Slope Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/new-york/park-slope-historic-district-80002636/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75318467","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Old_First_Reformed_Church_(Brooklyn)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7083989"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/brooklyn/old-first-reformed-church-98000316/"}
