It was built in 1920-1921 by August Nyberg, who was its owner, architect and developer.","why_significant":"The building is significant for its Renaissance Revival architecture and for its role in the commerce of Paso Robles. It housed the Bank of Italy, later the Bank of America, along with doctors, lawyers, businesses and lodge groups. The bank is credited with supporting local farmers and businesses and fostering the town's growth.","narrative":"Rising three stories at the corner of Park and 13th Streets, this brick commercial building is the tallest in downtown Paso Robles. August Nyberg owned, designed and developed it, starting construction in late 1920 and finishing in 1921. Its Renaissance Revival design includes tan brick veneer, quoin-like brick corners, recessed transoms, latticed second-story windows with radiating brick arches, and a stepped stone pediment over the Park Street door. The Bank of Italy moved into the east half of the ground floor in 1922 and bought the building in 1923. After the Bank of America took over the bank in 1930, it became the town's only bank from 1937 to 1958 and remodeled the ground floor in 1947. Upper floors held doctors, lawyers, businesses and lodge meeting rooms. A 1993 restoration added seismic reinforcement, sprinklers and a new elevator while keeping the original appearance. Ground-floor businesses and state offices now occupy the building.","period_of_significance":"1921-1948","architect_builder":"Nyberg, August","architectural_style":"Renaissance","criteria":["A"],"status_note":"In excellent condition and in use. It was restored in 1993, with ground-floor businesses and State of California offices on the upper floors.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:27.710363-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_CA/98000245.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/98000245/68bb08a67d-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/98000245/68bb08a67d-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"MagWine","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Bank_of_Italy_Building,_Paso_Robles.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">MagWine</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Bank_of_Italy_Building,_Paso_Robles.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/123861447","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bank_of_Italy_(Paso_Robles,_California)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14681575"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/california/san-luis-obispo-county/bank-of-italy-98000245/"}
