Its buildings date from about 1836 to the mid-twentieth century.","why_significant":"The farm is significant under Criterion C as an intact, representative example of farmstead development in Newark Valley. It keeps a grouping of farm buildings from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, including a Queen Anne house and a gambrel-roofed dairy barn built from Cornell University plans. The farm is tied to the Blewer family from 1836 to 1950.","narrative":"Blewer Farm is a 473-acre agricultural property along Blewer-Mead Road in Newark Valley, with most land in Newark Valley and about 47 acres in the Town of Candor. The farm was started by John and Julia Blewer in 1836 and stayed in the family until 1950. Its buildings cluster near the West Branch of Owego Creek and include a two-and-one-half-story Queen Anne house from the late nineteenth century that keeps its original floor plan, woodwork and pocket doors. A small mid-nineteenth-century tenant house probably survives from the two houses shown on an 1855 map. A gambrel-roofed dairy barn from about 1935, built from a Cornell University design after fire destroyed its predecessor, anchors the working complex. A moved former residence served as a work shop and, in the 1940s, a refreshment stand during air shows held on the farm. Together the buildings preserve the feeling of an early twentieth-century farmstead.","period_of_significance":"Ca. 1836-1940","architect_builder":"unknown","architectural_style":"Late Victorian/Queen Anne","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Dairy barn used as a barn until about 1995 and now mainly for storage; main house retains a high degree of integrity; former residence now a work shop.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:51.596951-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/98000166.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/98000166/bc1b25d4c8-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/98000166/bc1b25d4c8-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Delphinium1","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Farmhouse_on_Blewer_Farm.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Delphinium1</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Farmhouse_on_Blewer_Farm.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75315102","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blewer_Farm","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14706186"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/tioga-county/blewer-farm-98000166/"}
