The farm dates to the early 1840s, and its oldest surviving building, the frame house, was built around 1872.","why_significant":"The farm is significant under Criterion C as an intact, representative example of farm construction in Newark Valley. It retains buildings from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries that keep their period character in form, materials and detailing. It is tied to the local context of agricultural development and rural Newark Valley, 1865-1946.","narrative":"Lipe Farm is a 167-acre farmstead on a hilltop about two miles southeast of Newark Valley village. The family has owned the land since 1830, and the present frame house was built around 1872 for George and Chastina Lipe. It was remodeled at the turn of the twentieth century with spindlework porches, a conical-roofed link between entrances and later window changes. The farm also keeps a gambrel-roofed dairy barn built after an 1908 lightning fire, a wagon house, a garage, a tractor shed, a hen house and a field stone wall along the road. A granary converted to a garage and a later silo are noncontributing. Most buildings and structures were in place by 1937. The property was listed for its architecture, as an intact and representative group of farm buildings from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The house has changed little since about 1900, and most outbuildings look much as they did when built.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1872-1920","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Late Victorian","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still used as a single dwelling and for farm buildings. The family no longer farms the land, which another farmer uses. Part of the land is leased for a cable company tower.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:51.13363-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/98000160.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/98000160/8f2d654ca9-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/98000160/8f2d654ca9-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Delphinium1","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Lipe_Farm_Buildings.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Delphinium1</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Lipe_Farm_Buildings.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75315098","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lipe_Farm","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6556282"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/tioga-county/lipe-farm-98000160/"}
