It is also significant under Criterion C as an excellent local example of a steel-framed Beaux Arts building by William Raymond Kaufman. It anchors \"Million Dollar Row,\" a group of three compatible civic buildings by the same architect.","narrative":"Gray County Courthouse, at 205 N. Russell in downtown Pampa, is a four-story, steel-frame Beaux Arts building completed in 1929. Its walls are veneered in Indiana limestone and buff brick, with paired brick pilasters, shallow pavilions, terra cotta ornament and metal pivoting windows. Inside are dark red marble wainscoting and stairs, oak woodwork and a large courtroom. Amarillo architect William Raymond Kaufman designed it, and Pampa contractor Harland L. Case built it for about $268,000. Pampa won the county seat from Lefors in 1928 after the 1926 oil boom transformed the town, and the courthouse came to symbolize that new prosperity. It forms part of \"Million Dollar Row,\" three civic buildings by Kaufman that share similar ornamentation and buff brick. It was dedicated in April 1930. The building still serves as the county courthouse and keeps much of its original character, despite changes such as the conversion of the fourth-floor jail to offices.","period_of_significance":"1929-1948","architect_builder":"W.R.
