It was built for a newly formed Methodist Episcopal congregation and dedicated in 1814.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the church is architecturally significant as a regional example of early nineteenth-century Federal era church architecture and meeting house form. It is noted for its rigorous simplicity and fine sandstone construction, and it retains a high degree of integrity despite limited changes.","narrative":"Built of local sandstone on a small lot beside North Broadway in Upper Nyack, the Old Stone Church was raised by a Methodist Episcopal congregation formed after a Dutch Reformed petition for a Nyack church was rejected in 1812. Land and quarry stone were donated by William Palmer, and the trustees resolved to begin building the next morning. The church was dedicated in March 1814. It is a plain three-by-two-bay building with a slate gable roof, six-over-six windows with splayed stone lintels, and timber-framed clapboard gables. Inside is an open auditorium with a raised platform and a south gallery. The roof was altered around 1870, when the eaves were extended and slate installed. The building is recognized as a regional example of a Federal era meeting house, valued for its restrained design and stonework. It remains in religious use and keeps a high degree of its original character.","period_of_significance":"1812","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Early Republic / Federal","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still used as a religious facility; a small lavatory addition was made in the late twentieth century and the interior floor was replaced in the 1970s.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:51.180043-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/98000132.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/98000132/2da5c863b6-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/98000132/2da5c863b6-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"David Rivera","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:First_Methodist_Episcopal_Church_of_Nyack_4.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">David Rivera</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:First_Methodist_Episcopal_Church_of_Nyack_4.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75321444","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First_Methodist_Episcopal_Church_of_Nyack","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5453321"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/rockland-county/first-methodist-episcopal-church-of-nyack-98000132/"}
