Its board-and-batten siding and exposed rafters and trusses express the timber structure. It is one of few surviving mission churches established in central New York after the Civil War under Bishop Huntington.","narrative":"Calvary Episcopal Church is a small wood-frame chapel in the crossroads hamlet of McDonough, Chenango County. Built around 1884 in the Carpenter Gothic style, it measures about twenty-eight by sixty-four feet and has board and batten siding, a steep gable roof, pointed-arched windows, a small gabled portico and decorative stickwork in the gables. A wooden belfry was added in 1915. Inside, a single open room is covered by exposed rafters and scissor trusses, and the windows hold original stained glass. The parish began as a mission in 1882 and was organized in 1884, during a period of Episcopal growth in central New York under Bishop Frederic Dan Huntington. Money was short, and the church was not consecrated until 1889. Wood was the practical choice for a rural congregation, and designs came from pattern books and local builders. Few comparable mission churches survive in the diocese, and later changes such as pews, an organ and a flat ceiling have left the original character largely intact.","period_of_significance":"1884-1915","architect_builder":"unknown","architectural_style":"Gothic Revival (Carpenter Gothic)","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still used as a religious facility; the form says it retains a high degree of integrity to its date of construction.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:49.97721-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/98000130.pdf"},"photo":null,"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75312287","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calvary_Episcopal_Church_(McDonough,_New_York)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5024176"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/chenango-county/calvary-epsicopal-church-98000130/"}
