It is also significant for its role in private education (1834-1890) and public education (1890-95), followed by use by social and civic organizations.","narrative":"Built in 1834, Lawrence Academy in Falmouth is a white, wood-frame Greek Revival building with a monumental two-story Ionic portico and a two-part bell tower. Local residents organized it as a private academy to supplement the public schools, and it taught pupils of both sexes in a classical program. In 1891 the Town of Falmouth bought the building and converted it to a public high school, altering the facade into three bays. The current bell tower is a 1976 replica of the original, and a rear addition of about 1948 doubled the building's size while matching its massing and details. Much of the original interior plan and finishes remain. The building is considered one of the earliest and finest Greek Revival buildings in the town, and it reflects the growth of academies in Massachusetts and the later shift to public high schools. After its school years it served social and civic organizations, and it is still used as a meeting hall.","period_of_significance":"1834-1948","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Greek Revival","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Described as little altered and excellently maintained; currently used as a civic meeting hall.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:04.913043-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/49/7940/63794049/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/98000123.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/98000123/7f55e8adda-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/98000123/7f55e8adda-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"WestFalmouth","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Lawrence_Academy,_20_Academy_Lane,_Falmouth,_MA.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">WestFalmouth</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Lawrence_Academy,_20_Academy_Lane,_Falmouth,_MA.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63794049","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lawrence_Academy_(Falmouth,_Massachusetts)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6503789"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/barnstable-county/lawrence-academy-98000123/"}
