It is also an evolved late Georgian house, remodeled about 1939 by architect Milton L. Grigg with Georgian Revival features.","narrative":"Red Hills is a two-story, five-bay brick house on a 500-foot knoll along Polo Grounds Road in Albemarle County, Virginia. Built in phases around 1800, it has rear brick wings, late Georgian mantels, built-in presses and a boxed winder stair. Tradition dates the work to 1797 and 1804 under Garland Carr, while tax records and letters suggest his son, Dr. Francis Carr, completed the front section around 1821. Francis Carr was a physician, newspaper publisher, agricultural society secretary and early officer of the University of Virginia. Later, Adolph Russow operated Bellevue Vineyards here and led a large Charlottesville winery. About 1939 architects Milton L. Grigg and William Hale oversaw a Georgian Revival remodeling that added a portico, cornices and a new transom. The 26.5-acre tract also holds a barn, sheds, a well, a boxwood garden and a slave cemetery marked by fieldstones. The property was recognized for its local significance.","period_of_significance":"1797-ca. 1939","architect_builder":"Grigg, Milton L.; Hale, William","architectural_style":"Georgian; Georgian Revival","criteria":["B","C"],"status_note":"House and outbuildings are described as in very good condition; the house remains a single dwelling with modern additions made compatibly.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:00.566164-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/51/6793/41679351/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/98000047.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/98000047/5125cf8738-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/98000047/5125cf8738-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Red_Hills_entrance_from_Polo_Grounds_Road.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Red_Hills_entrance_from_Polo_Grounds_Road.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41679351","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_Hills_(Charlottesville,_Virginia)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14713122"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/albemarle-county/red-hills-98000047/"}
