It was designed by Louis Humbert Asbury in 1920 and completed in 1920-1921 for Cliffside Mills.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the school was the first modern school building in Rutherford County and a precursor to consolidated schools of the 1920s. It also cites its association with the Haynes family of Cliffside Mills, with superintendent Clyde Atkinson Erwin, and with the Work Projects Administration vocational and physical education building of 1940-1941.","narrative":"Cliffside Public School is a two-story brick building on a raised basement, set on a grassy forecourt at the north end of the Cliffside mill village in southeast Rutherford County. Louis Humbert Asbury, Sr., a Charlotte architect, designed it in 1920, and it was built in 1920-1921 and dedicated on 22 April 1922. Its T-shaped plan, multicolored glazed brick, and Indiana limestone portico and stringcourses are typical of Classical Revival school design. The school was commissioned by Charles Henry Haynes, president of Cliffside Mills, to replace a frame school that had become too small. It is regarded as the first modern school in Rutherford County and an early example of the consolidated school buildings of the 1920s. Clyde Atkinson Erwin, who served as the village's superintendent from 1919 to 1926, worked closely on its planning. The adjoining vocational and physical education building was built with Work Projects Administration labor in 1940-1941.","period_of_significance":"1920-1941","architect_builder":"Louis Humbert Asbury, Sr. (architect); builder not identified in the form","architectural_style":"Classical Revival","criteria":["A","B","C"],"status_note":"Occupied as a school in 1921 and in use as a school at the time of the nomination","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-haiku-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.1-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 17:11:41.107745-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/80/7221/47722180/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/97001667.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/97001667/7b0f0f0ca8-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/97001667/7b0f0f0ca8-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Upstateherd","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Cliffside_School.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Upstateherd</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Cliffside_School.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47722180","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cliffside_Public_School","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q19865149"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/rutherford-county/cliffside-public-school-97001667/"}
