Robinson and designed by local architect Daniel A. Damkroeger. A 1888 carriage house sits at the northwest corner of the lot.","why_significant":"The house is significant under Criterion C as a good representative example of the \"Alpine\" variant of the Stick/Eastlake style, a form once common in Santa Cruz but now rare. Damkroeger was the only local designer to use this variant, and only about a half dozen of roughly thirty examples remain. It is judged significant at the local level.","narrative":"Built in 1888 at the eastern edge of Santa Cruz, this two-and-one-half-story wood frame house was designed by local architect Daniel A. Damkroeger for Elias H. Robinson, a Minnesota real estate broker who arrived during the 1887 land boom. Damkroeger adapted the popular Stick/Eastlake style with Swiss Cottage, or \"Alpine,\" details such as scroll-sawn flatwork on porch rails and gable trim, and wide, sharply flared eaves. About thirty such houses were built during his brief stay in the city, and perhaps six survive. The Robinson House retains a decorative wraparound porch, applied geometric window trim and original drop siding on several elevations. The 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake damaged it severely, and the lost gable ornament was reproduced from 1976 survey photographs. Interiors no longer survive after long use as apartments. Although the surrounding area has become mixed commercial and residential, the house still conveys the look of late nineteenth-century Santa Cruz.","period_of_significance":"1888","architect_builder":"Damkroeger, Daniel A.","architectural_style":"Late Victorian/Stick/Eastlake","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Currently used as an apartment building (multiple dwelling). Interiors were lost to apartment use and 1989 earthquake damage; the exterior was repaired, including a replicated gable ornament.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:28.007322-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_CA/97001634.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/97001634/f11fa6c241-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/97001634/f11fa6c241-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Eugene Zelenko","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:USA-Santa_Cruz-Elias_H._Robinson_House-3.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Eugene Zelenko</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:USA-Santa_Cruz-Elias_H._Robinson_House-3.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/123861893","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q133528717"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/california/santa-cruz-county/robinson-elias-h-house-97001634/"}
