It shows a late Federal meeting house form embellished with emerging Gothic details such as pointed arches and a tower. Despite later changes it remains substantially intact, and it recalls the agricultural prosperity of the Thompson Ridge community.","narrative":"Set among farmland at the crossroads of Route 302 and County Route 17 in Crawford, this stone church was built in 1831 for the Hopewell Presbyterian congregation, founded in 1778. Samuel Bull served as mason and John H. Corwin as carpenter, and the building cost $4,134.38. It is a two-story, three-by-four-bay structure with a gable roof, Gothic-arched windows, three recessed entrances and a bell tower. The design combines a late Federal meeting house form, with its rectangular proportions, low gable roof and delicate cornice, with early Gothic-inspired arches and tower. Remodeling around 1871, in 1910, 1931 and 1955 changed the chancel, windows, floor, pews and vestibule, and a modern education wing was added in 1967. The sanctuary still retains its original coved ceiling and plaster cornice. The church is valued as a regional example of this hybrid style and as a landmark of the hamlet of Thompson Ridge.","period_of_significance":"1831 - ca. 1910","architect_builder":"Corwin, John H., Carpenter; Bull, Samuel, Mason","architectural_style":"Mid-19th Century/Gothic Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still in religious use as a church; the sanctuary survives virtually intact from the nineteenth century, and a 1967 Christian Education Building is attached.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:50.774572-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/97001621.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/97001621/416e69b602-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/97001621/416e69b602-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"The original uploader was Daniel Case at English Wikipedia.","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Hopewell_Presbyterian_Church.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">The original uploader was Daniel Case at English Wikipedia.</a>, <a href=\"http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Hopewell_Presbyterian_Church.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75320674","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hopewell_Presbyterian_Church_(Crawford,_New_York)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5900399"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/orange-county/hopewell-presbyterian-church-97001621/"}
