It is historically significant for its integral role in the religious and social life of the Fort Edward community. The interior retains nearly all its historic features and finishes.","narrative":"Built in 1846, this brick church at 112 Broadway in Fort Edward follows the English parish church tradition of Gothic Revival design. It has a steep gabled front, slate roof, limestone trim, decorative corbelling, buttressed side walls and tall lancet windows. A castellated side tower was added in 1914-15, when the main entrance moved into it, and a parish hall was built in 1896. Inside, the church keeps its center aisle, molded pews, pointed-arch doorways, scissors trusses, a vaulted mahogany ceiling, stained glass from 1857, an 1853 baptismal font, an 1880 Johnson & Son organ and a \"Sittings Free\" plaque tied to the original deed, which barred renting or selling pews. Daniel Wing paid off the remaining debt, and the church was consecrated in 1846. A fire in 1933 damaged the parish hall and part of the sanctuary. The church was listed for its architecture and for its long role in the community's social life.","period_of_significance":"1846 - 1947","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Mid-19th Century/Gothic Revival","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Still an active congregation and used as a church; the form says it remains involved in community support efforts.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:50.103256-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/97001617.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/97001617/98b4ac4400-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/97001617/98b4ac4400-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 2.0","author":"Doug Kerr from Upstate New York","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:St._James_Episcopal_Church_Fort_Edward_NY_Sep_09.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Doug Kerr from Upstate New York</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 2.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:St._James_Episcopal_Church_Fort_Edward_NY_Sep_09.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75322870","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._James_Bible_Fellowship","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7588475"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/washington-county/st-james-episcopal-church-97001617/"}
