It combines somewhat urban and provincial design and has what the form calls the highest-styled ornamental Federal detail in Columbia County. The parlors are exceptionally intact, and the building keeps a high degree of architectural integrity.","narrative":"Built around 1810 on the north side of Route 217 in Claverack, this brick farmhouse is a two-story, five-bay, center-hall Federal dwelling on a stone foundation with a standing seam metal gable roof. It was probably built soon after Stephen Storm married Elizabeth Philips in 1807, on land her father had owned. Storm later served as a New York State Assemblyman in 1823-24. Andrew M. Pulver bought the farm in 1839 and lived there until about 1900; during that period the rear kitchen wing was raised to add bedroom space. The house has a central entrance with a fanlight and a columned portico, and unusual pointed elliptical garret windows on the east end. Inside, the two parlors keep original shutters, mantles, molded plaster ceilings and ornament, some of it molded lead. The narrow hall and low single-story rear section mix urban and provincial ideas. The house is considered significant for these Federal details and its high integrity.","period_of_significance":"ca.1810-ca.1845","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Early Republic/Federal","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still used as a single dwelling; the two barns that stood on the stone foundations were burned about 1948.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:50.647592-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/97001616.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/97001616/3a4bbf163a-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/97001616/3a4bbf163a-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Daniel Case","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Stephen_Storm_House,_Claverack,_NY.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Daniel Case</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Stephen_Storm_House,_Claverack,_NY.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75312387","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stephen_Storm_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q2345091"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/columbia-county/storm-stephen-house-97001616/"}
