It later became a public hall and an Odd Fellows lodge, making it a social and fraternal center until 1903. It also typifies simple Vernacular Greek Revival brick commercial building of the early 1860s.","narrative":"Built in 1864 by public subscription, this one-story brick building on Main Street in Copperopolis was the armory of the Union Guard, also called the Copperopolis Blues, during the last years of the Civil War. Men enlisted, trained and stored arms and uniforms here, and the town held rallies, military balls and Lincoln funeral observances in the hall. After the war it became a meeting hall, and from 1868 it housed the Odd Fellows lodge until the group moved in 1903. It is the only surviving armory in Calaveras County and the only brick armory in the Southern Mother Lode. The simple Vernacular Greek Revival design has common-bond brick walls, relieving arches, French doors and metal shutters on a stone foundation. A rear addition and a hip roof were added early; a porch and bathroom came later. Since 1940 it has served as a community hall.","period_of_significance":"1864-1903","architect_builder":"Unknown","architectural_style":"Mid-19th Century, Greek Revival (Vernacular Greek Revival)","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"In continuous use as a community hall since 1940, with dances, bingo games, meetings and social events; the building appears to be in largely 1860s condition apart from minor alterations.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:27.985404-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_CA/97001588.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/97001588/f08043ac06-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/97001588/f08043ac06-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY 3.0","author":"Bobak Ha'Eri","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:2009-0724-CA-052-CopperopolisArmory.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Bobak Ha'Eri</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:2009-0724-CA-052-CopperopolisArmory.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/123858472","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Copperopolis_Armory","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14681778"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/california/calaveras-county/copperopolis-armory-97001588/"}
