It reflects the social and religious history of antebellum Virginia. It housed Baptist, Methodist and Presbyterian worship and a shared Sunday School, and it remains largely unaltered.","narrative":"Union Church sits in the center of Earlysville, Albemarle County, Virginia. It is a one-story wood-framed building with weatherboard siding, a standing-seam metal roof and a low fieldstone foundation, measuring about 50 by 30 feet. John Early gave the 1.156-acre site in 1833 so that a meeting house could be used freely by all Christian denominations. Baptists, Methodists and Presbyterians worshipped there, and the Episcopalians shared its Sunday School. The interior was originally one open room. Around 1880 or the turn of the century, partitions created a vestibule and flanking Sunday School rooms, and an eight-sided altar was added. The building has no plumbing or electricity and retains oil lamp brackets, simple original trim and two early pews. A complex roof truss, built after the original rafters were taken down, is its most striking feature. Sunday School use continued until 1977, and restoration began after 1995. It was listed for its architecture and its rare interdenominational character.","period_of_significance":"1833 - 1947","architect_builder":"unknown","architectural_style":"Early Republic: Early Classical Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Used as an interdenominational Sunday School until 1977; no functions were held until 1995, when Friends of Union Church formed to oversee restoration.
